Spider Vessel

date. 2011

city. Red Deer

size. ceramic 76cm x 30cm x 30cm

My genuine passion for ceramics was spawned with this creation. Inspired by Swiss artist Alberto Giacometti, and his unique slender figure sculptures, I was drawn to testing the limits of this medium. With 23cm legs extending 15cm from the base, there was a great deal of doubt that this piece would survive both the bisque firing and the glaze firing. The delicacy of the medium is reflected in the subject, a spider protecting its egg sac. I wanted to explore the limits of this medium and push it beyond the ordinary, into a space where curiosities are indulged
